Grain of Salt

sometimes i think i hear the universe
speaking to me
in the hushed tones of a lover

everything will come in its own time

but in my experience with lovers
this is no reassurance

what begins in a whirl
of color and light peppered with
just the right amount of uncertainty
and anticipation
too often ends in a sour puddle of recrimination
and regret

when the words tumble from the sky
i look up knowing there are no guarantees
the good are too often punished
the innocent condemned to death
